In
Karnataka after the DSS assessment it was decided that the most efficient way
to achieve a balanced water distribution, water needed to be lifted from the
head end to the tail end.
As
it was obvious that the farmers in the head-end would not invest in such a
solution, the strong evidence shown by the DSS made the Chief Engineer to
decide that the required pumps would have to be procured by the state
government.

In the Ujjani
reservoir there are two dams in close proximity. One of these dams often runs
out of water by July while the other one overflows. The proximity allowed to
toy with the idea to dig a tunnel to transfer the surplus water from one dam to
the other.
By
running a simulation with the DSS it was possible to see that there was
sufficient water in the overflowing dam to share some with the other dam but
that the cost benefit ratio was not favourable to justify the investment. It
took hardly a week to assemble hard facts which helped to avoid wasteful
investment.
